Heat pump rebates available in Massachusetts. Mass Save, a collaboration of Massachusetts electric and natural gas utilities and energy efficiency service providers offers two types of air-source heat pump rebates to eligible customers.

Whole-home rebates of $10,000 are available for homes that meet certain specific weatherization requirements, and a qualified contractor is hired to install a qualified air-source heat pump sized to heat and cool the entire home. On the rebate form, homeowners are able to indicate that they plan to keep existing heating system as long as it’s disconnected or only used as a backup. Depending on household income and other details, an enhanced rebate of $16,000 is available.

Partial-home rebate of $1,250 per ton of capacity is available for homeowners that elect not to replace the entire HVAC system with air source heat pumps, or using them to heat and cool a portion of the home. This partial-home rebate is based on the size of the heat pump—you’ll get $1,250 back per “ton” of capacity, up to $10,000.

If keeping a fossil fuel system (oil, gas, or propane), so-called “integrated controls” are required to qualify for this rebate. Similar to a thermostat that automatically switches between heat pump and conventional system at a particular outdoor temperature, usually around 35 degrees F, these help maximize heat pump use when it makes the most sense—in milder weather, when it costs much less to run than a convential fuel system.

Mass Save also has a financing program called the HEAT Loan, offering homeowners up to a 7-year, zero-interest payment option depending on utility provider and the installer being a member of the HPIN. Homeowners can borrow up to $50,000 toward the cost of a heat pump system and $25,000 for weatherization.

Before homeowners can access and qualify for Mass Save rebates or incentives, they must schedule and complete a no-cost Home Energy Assessment (HEA) with an authorized home assessment contractor. Valid for three years, the purpose of the HEA is to ascertain how properties use their energy and identify the things homeowners can do to improve their energy usage. Due to high demand, appointments for HEA can be booked months out, so don’t delay if considering upgrades. Once a homeowner has their assessment, they can access program benefits for weatherization improvements and energy efficiency upgrades including Heat Pump HVAC that qualify for Mass Save rebates (up to $10,000) and incentives (0% interest HEAT loans up to $50,000). To schedule your no-cost Home Energy Assessment, start by calling 866-527-SAVE.
